This course is designed to prepare the student for the practical skills and written examinations for Pump Operator certification. Class work will include: safe driving techniques, preventative maintenance, pump operations, hydraulic calculations, water supply and apparatus systems.
The course begins inside the classroom and ends outside with pumping apparatus. The main emphasis of this course is on “hands-on” exercises using various types of pumps, hose sizes and nozzles. This course alone is not designed to produce expert pump operators. Students must apply the basics learned from this course with continued hands-on practical applications with apparatus in their departments to build and maintain proficiency in pump apparatus operations.

There will be reading assignments prior to the class. As the class date approaches arrangements will be made to get you the textbook (included).
There are two exams you will take to qualify for the CT Safe Boating Certificate. Upon successfully completing the course you will qualify for the CT Safe Boating Certificate with the Water Skiing Endorsement, and the Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation.
1. There is a 20 Question CT State Specific Exam that tests your knowledge of CT Rules and Regulations. We will go over those requirements using a separate Power Point deck, however, the information can be found in the 2023 CT Boater's Guide. Hint - concentrate on these sections: Certificate and Education, Safety Equipment. Boating Regulations, Paddling Awareness, Environmental Awareness. Second Hint: The state test has several questions related to young boaters as to ages when they are able to operate boats and jet skis, operate a boat pulling tubes and water skiers, and when they must wear life jackets. Because of some serious injuries related to tubing and perceived issues of reckless operation of jet skis, much of the state exam covers those issues. For purposes of the CT rules and the exam, "Water Skiing" includes any device (water ski(s), inflatable tubes, knee boards, etc.) towed by a motorized vessel (Boat or Jet Ski). Also, jet ski is the more common term for a Personal Water Craft ("PWC").
2. There is a 50 question exam that is used in CT as well as most states covering rules common to all boating in the United States (the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, "NASBLA" exam). Hint: Sections 2,3,4,7,and 11 generate the most questions. A grade of 80% on each test is required to qualify for the CT Safe Boating certificate.
